A FAMILY BUSINESS…

My husband, Jody Robertson, has grown up raising cows. His daddy has cows, his uncle has cows and he started his own herd when he was 15 years old. We now have our own family of 6 and our cattle farm is without a doubt a family affair. It’s a year round job with constant challenges where one chore just leads to the next. Along with challenges, farm life brings great joy and a sense of accomplishment knowing that we are raising our family to understand the value of hard work.

THE HERD…

The cattle we raise are Angus based. My husband studies genetics, the market and all other aspects of the cattle business. While the trend now pushes “grass fed beef”, our cattle are not strictly grass fed. They always have grass available, in addition to what they are fed, and almost everything they eat is grown right here on the farm.

Our momma cows eat hay and some corn in the Winter but the majority of their diet is grass. Their calves get milk and grass up to weaning and then they’re fed wheat or corn silage, which is basically the whole plant chopped up and fermented for storage, mixed with corn and a little cottonseed.

As the calves grow bigger, the ration becomes more corn, a few peanut hulls and less silage. Again, almost everything they eat is grown right here. Some other producers finish cattle on byproduct mixes using soy hulls, corn gluten or other types of feed but we prefer whole grains or whole plant feeds.

THE CORN…

The corn we finish our calves with is the same garden variety that we eat. We eat it fresh off the cob. When it is dried, we grind some of it into grits and cornmeal… and some we roll and use it as the base to our finishing mix. It’s White Field Corn - Trucker’s Favorite. You can’t spray Round Up on it like the hybrid varieties that the big farmers use and it doesn’t make nearly as much per acre - but it tastes better.

WHAT SETS US APART…

So if you’re wondering what sets our beef apart from what you buy at any of the big chain grocery outlets, that would be it - old fashioned, open pollination corn. There are so many terms nowadays used to market and confuse consumers - grass fed, grass finished, pasture raised, all organic, all natural, etc. but we don’t believe in labels. We simply believe that home grown tastes better because it is better. We take pride in our family, our farm, our cattle and our beef. If you try it, we think you’ll agree that home grown is best.
